Fiercely electrifying.
That sums up Friday night where The Kills took the stage at Terminal 5.
Admittedly, I didn't know much of The Kills' music until shortly before Ash & Ice was released this past June. I first became enthralled by "The Last Goodbye" from their 2011 album Blood Pressures and then "Heart of a Dog," which was the first single shared in anticipation of Ash & Ice. Once the full album was released, I dove deep into it and began making up for lost time on their four previous records. When I saw they would be touring in New York, there was no question I'd be in attendance.
They started the show with "Heart of a Dog," Mosshart a force to be reckoned with. She was fierce, yet not angry. Vigorous though not threatening. She was alluring. Pure turbulence; an unruly tornado as she moved across stage dragging the mic stand behind her, head banging on beat, hair fanning; spinning fervently, her arms punchy and erratic, expelling the troublesome and inviting us all to do the same.
In all, she was captivating.
The song slowed to a close and she peered out, eyes bright and a playful smile. I thought 'that woman's got a soul of scars and a heart of gold. She is the badass-iest sweetheart.'
As for Jamie, his energy is more isolated, which isn't to say he doesn't body jolt and jab his guitar on beat because he does. He just does so with more compressed movements and from within a smaller stage radius. His role isn't front-and-center. His role is to set her alive with gritty guitar riffs and he does it well. She feeds off him, we feed off her, and he feeds of us, then launching into an enthralling guitar solo and closing a later song out with a flirtatious grin to the crowd and playful cock-it-and-pull-it guitar move. He knows his attack.
They're a duo who've been at it for 15+ years; best friends, band mates, lovers of a different level. Their dynamic is intriguing and their bond inspiring. These two have securely etched a place in my heart.
