When I was in North Carolina last month, I was driving with a friend and asked what music he'd been listening to lately.
He queued up "Girl" by The Internet, an R&B, urban contemporary group based out of L.A. From the opening lines, I was into it; the eerie oscillating riff reeling me in (I later learned this was a sample of Neil Merryweather's "Step in the Right Direction"). The track was smooth, soothing and sexy, recalling influences of Aaliyah and bearing vocal similarities to Banks.
A few weeks later, the song came back to me while watching Netflix's new series Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts. It was aptly used during a lustful scene between Watt's character Diane and Sophie Cookson's character Sydney. Is it a coincidence that the singer's name is also Sydney (a.k.a. Syd)? Probably.
