The other night, I was watching About Alex, a film about six friends who come back together after one of them attempts suicide. During a scene in the kitchen, a song plays, muted in the background while they prep dinner and argue over names for a lost dog. Amongst the clash of opinions and clamor of mockery, a harmonica tugs at my ear and vocals, dripping in Southern, garage-soul charm, fill up my head. I tune out the dialogue and tune into the song.
It's called "Funeral Beds" by The Districts, and it's been a steady play for the past few days.
This track is off their 2013 release, Telephone, however the band just released a new album in January titled, A Flourish and a Spoil. Check out the opening track, "4th and Roebling." That's been another popular play the past few days.
As for the film, I now have a newfound admiration for Max Greenfield. He's captivating as Josh, a charismatic, sarcastic asshole that you love to hate (because he's grandly stubborn and unapologetically crass) and hate to love (because he's charmingly quick-witted, and because he's the only friend determined to address the elephant in the room). Greenfield is phenomenal, though I'm sure any New Girl devotee would have told me that.
I'm now onboard.
If you're interested in watching the film, you can find it on Netflix or Amazon Video.
