Oh, Mr. Bird, Don't Break Apple's Heart

This Friday, Andrew Bird will release his new album, Are You Serious.

I first heard this news while listening to the NPR All Songs Considered podcast where host Bob Boilen talked with Bird about his creative process, evolving writing style and the different subjects for the upcoming album. Amongst the discussions, they previewed various songs starting with "Capsized," a groovy tune with a smooth, bluesy intro and catchy drums that just don't quit. It remind me a lot of Bill Withers' "Use Me,” and I love it.

A few weeks later, Bird premiered “Left Handed Kisses,” a gripping conversational duet featuring Fiona Apple that grapples with fate and the burden of skepticism. In the music video, the two sit face-to-face on wooden chairs, quipping back and forth over the state of their relationship; a wrestle of restraint and release.

It’s an emotional piece, Apple's eyes burning with anguish and a waning hope, her mouth grit with anger and body quivering of pent-up fire.

The following day, the duo took this impassioned piece to the stage, performing live on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and wowing viewers with their musical chemistry. The ferocity with which Apple sings is blood-stilling.

Oh, Mr. Bird.

Oh, Ms. Apple.
