Father John Misty, Sophisticatedly Suave
I saw Father John Misty a few weeks ago and it was a delight through and through.
From the stimulating light design with colors ablaze to his roaring smooth vocals; his poetically caustic lyrics complimented by his perfectly flowing mane, hand perched above his head, palm to the sky, striking a pose like a pinup doll; and his spiffy suit jacket sitting broad on his shoulders and slender at the hips while he sashayed across stage, hips swaying and shoulders slowly alternating on beat until he reunited with the mic and crooned the next lines, hands sunk deep into jetted pockets.
It was cleverly crafted and meticulously executed. It was a sight, and it was an experience. It was sophisticated and, he, suave.
For a taste of the show, here’s a clip of “Strange Encounter” with a photo I took highlighting the chromatic spectral creations of lighting designer Pete Zellan.
And the song that always get’s me grooving, “True Affection.”
It was a great night of entertainment; a spectacle, though not to simply set off our visual sensors and impress us, or distract us. It was to awaken us. To interrupt our passive sing-alongs with a moment of introspection; to prompt the thought "what is our culture becoming? Addicted to being turned on and tuned in. Obsessed with the superficial, the material. No. Let’s reclaim our empathy, compassion and intention."
Thanks for the music, Misty. Thanks for the wisdom.
