I first remember discovering Lissie while living in Wilmington, NC and listening to local radio station 98.3, The Penguin. They played her cover of Joe Smith's "Games People Play" and I really dug it.
I took a look into her musical releases and saw that she recorded a cover album titled Covered Up With Flowers, including a badass, raspy rock cover of Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness."
What a woman.
Hands on the wheel
uh uh, f*ck that
Hands on the wheel
kick drum, high hat
While I had become well acquainted with these songs over the years, I didn't know much of her original music...until this weekend.
I'm not sure what it was that brought be back to her, but I dove straight into her 2013 album Back to Forever and have been listening to it on repeat all week.
It feels a bit like Tristan Prettyman's soul to bare album, Cedar + Gold, with its mix of upbeat pop melodies and slow heartfelt songs, along with a dose of bold and snarky lyrics that edge on the side of Neko Case.
I dig it.
